Why Is Waste Management Important?

Nepal needs effective long term and efficient waste management systems at both the municipal and community levels. While Doko Recyclers provides large scale waste management services in urban areas, we also work with various stakeholders including private, public and development sector organizations to create waste management models that are specific to their unique needs. We aim to leave each client with an increased awareness of the importance of proper waste management while developing contextually relevant (geography, socio-economic needs, cultural nuances, etc.), effective, and sustainable systems for them.

Why Do We Consult?

Doko Recyclers aids in creating waste management models that strive to preserve both the cultural and environmental aspects of our working areas. Rural and peri-urban areas transitioning into larger towns are particularly at higher risk to succumb to the pitfalls of uncontrolled and unplanned waste management such as increased risks for illnesses through contaminated air and water. If these areas take this opportunity to introduce a waste management system that transitions with their growth, it will be able to better accommodate community needs while preserving community identity.

What Have We Done So Far?

In this vein, Doko collaborated with Triangle Generation Humanitaire (TGH) and ARSOW Nepal in Gunsakot, Sindhupalchowk; with Connecting Spaces, a Swiss non-profit in Madi Municipality in Chitwan; and with UNESCO and Federation of Swayambhu Management & Conservation (FSMC) in the Swayambhu Monument Zone in Kathmandu, to help design and implement sustainable systems for waste management, working in close collaboration with local authorities, relevant organizations, and other stakeholder groups.

We of course understand that your event or project will be unique but we encourage you to reach out to us either via email or phone. Our goal is to develop waste management systems that fit local needs so that your community is not only protecting the environment from water, plastic, and air pollution, but ensuring it can utilize ecosystem services for years to come.

In order to achieve objectives from our partner organizations, Doko Recyclers proposes several ways it can help facilitate a proper waste management system in the area:

Doko Recyclers

Waste Assessment

Our assessments help us design a Waste Management System and identify key waste management strategies. We will use waste audits, interviews, market feasibility studies, and surveys.

Doko Recyclers

Waste Management Planning

Planning plays an imperative role in achieving sustainable waste management as it provides an overview of all the waste generated and provides treatment options for different categories of waste.

System Design and Monitoring

System Design entails discussing the ideal location, infrastructure and systems for a Community Recycling Center (CRC), a collection center for dry recyclables.

Doko Recyclers

Community Recycling Center Site Assessment and Designing

A site assessment will be established (if needed) to build a CRC. Accessibility, land use, and geology need to be considered when planning to build a CRC.

Waste Collection System Planning

Systems for collection of different waste streams, parties responsible for attending to collection, collection routes, and the end markets for all collected items will be planned in detail.

Waste Management Training

Training will be provided for different stakeholders so they are better equipped to manage waste. We also train individuals directly involved in the waste management system to foster its smooth operation.

  • Rural Waste Management

If you are an organization and want to head waste management in a rural location, we provide waste management consultations to help you devise a system that works for you, your community, municipality, or project area. Doko will work with you every step of the way to conduct waste assessments, market feasibility surveys, awareness programs, mind map with local stakeholders, and develop waste management committees.

Our approach strives to bridge the gap between municipalities, international and national organizations, and local community members to create long-lasting, comprehensive, and self-sustaining solutions including the installation and design of required segregation waste bins, planning of a CRC (Community Recycling Center) or MRF (Material Recovery Facility), providing infrastructure to bail or incinerate waste that cannot be recycled, training community members on the importance of waste segregation, and creating a WMC (Waste Management Committee)- a local task force who can help us establish and lead waste management in project areas.

  • Event Waste Management

We work with organizers to create green and sustainable events such as concerts, 5k runs, film festivals, fairs, seminars, etc. We provide recycling bins to collect recyclable waste generated at the venue. We also train event ground staff and volunteers to man the bins so that event attendees can segregate their waste at source. At the end of the event, we take these collected recyclables to our facility to sort and recycle. By simply spreading awareness about sustainability at your event, you end up saving landfill space, natural resources, and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

Note: Consultancy and event management fees will be charged as applicable.
