Green School Project

Empowering Young Environmental Stewards through School-Based Waste Management

Description

The Green School Project, jointly implemented by KOICA Nepal and Doko Recyclers, introduced sustainable waste management systems in 10 government schools across the Kathmandu Valley. Through waste segregation infrastructure and the formation of student-led Eco-Clubs, the project built environmental awareness and practical recycling habits among over 400 students, fostering cleaner school environments and long-term behavioral change.

Trained over 400 students as Eco-Club members to promote sustainable practices within their schools

The Green School Project was a joint effort by KOICA Nepal and Doko Recyclers to improve waste management systems in government schools across the Kathmandu Valley. Funded through KOICA Nepal’s Green ODA program, the project was implemented in ten schools—five from Kageshwori Manohara Municipality and five from Lalitpur District.

As part of the project, each school was provided with waste segregation infrastructure placed at key locations. This included bins in 590 classrooms, 27 common spaces, and 10 central collection points. These setups helped students and staff separate waste at the source and supported more efficient recycling.

To build capacity and promote long-term change, Eco-Clubs were formed in each school, with 40 student members per club. These students were trained through awareness workshops, guided site visits to recycling facilities, and waste audits. They gained knowledge about recycling, the environmental impacts of poor waste management, and the importance of individual and collective action in improving waste practices.

The project aimed to create a cleaner school environment and foster environmental responsibility through hands-on learning and student engagement.
