Building Sustainable Waste Solutions in Nepal’s Rural Hills

Description

Implemented in partnership with MAP/NAMASTE, NARAA, and ANA, the Rural Mountain Waste Management Project tackled improper waste disposal in Ganga Jamuna Rural Municipality, Dhading. Doko Recyclers led efforts to establish a Community Recycling Centre (CRC) and promote sustainable practices through education and infrastructure. The initiative empowered local communities and schools to adopt 3R principles and reduce environmental and health risks from unmanaged waste.

Impact

A fully functional Community Recycling Centre (CRC) was established in Rigaun to support long-term waste collection, segregation, and processing.

200+

Over 200 schoolchildren participated in hands-on waste management awareness training, enhancing early environmental education.

The project created local employment opportunities by involving community members in recycling operations and outreach activities.

The Rigaun project was implemented by Doko Recyclers in collaboration with MAP/NAMASTE, NARAA (Nepal Association Ree Avenue), and ANA (Association Nepal Avenue) in Ganga Jamuna Rural Municipality located in Rigaun, Dhading. This project was started to address the problem of waste management in rural villages of the municipality as the traditional waste disposal methods were causing harm to the environment and health of the villagers. The project aimed to reduce the amount of waste being discarded in landfills and promote sustainable waste management practices in the community by establishing Moreover, a Community Recycling Centre (CRC) was established as a sustainable solution for waste management, facilitating the collection, segregation, and processing of waste materials. Under this project, awareness training on waste management for the community and schools was provided emphasizing the 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) to address the waste management problem.
